The Henry Martyn Institute: International Centre for Research, Interfaith Relations and Reconciliation (HMI) is an ecumenical Christian organisation dedicated to the objective study and teaching of religions and the promotion of interfaith relations and reconciliation. Since its founding in 1930, HMI has established a long record of teaching and research, with an ever-widening circle of research scholars from both within India and abroad, who use the Institute’s facilities for Master’s, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral research.
With well-qualified faculty, an excellent library and other facilities, HMI has become a major centre for research and teaching on matters related to the study of major religions. HMI publishes books on interfaith-related issues and an academic journal (the Journal of the Henry Martyn Institute), to which scholars and experts contribute from across the world.
Our Programmes
The Henry Martyn Institute offers a Post-Graduate Diploma Program in Islamic Studies and Interfaith Relations, an M.Th. Qualifying Program, and Language studies programs. The Institute as a member of the Advanced Institute for Research on Religion and Culture (ARRC), offers a Master’s of Theology program and Doctor of Theology program under the Senate of Serampore College (University).

HMI History
Certificate, Diploma and Post-Graduate Diploma Programmes in Islamic Studies and Interfaith Relations Henry Martyn Institute: International Centre for Research, Interfaith Relations and Reconciliation (HMI)– was established on 27th January, 1930 at 8 Egertan Road, Lahore under the name Henry Martyn School of Islamic Studies (HMSIS). The School was named after the nineteenth century British missionary who was appointed the first chaplain to the British East India Campany. The School’s first Principal, L. Bevan Jones, suggested Henry Martyn’s name as a reminder and tribute to this great missionary and scholar.
